yesterday i was looking for new “storm chasers” episodes when i noticed the pirate bay promoting a film called “nasty old people“. at first i thought it would be another major movie release and i didn’t want to get caught in a wake of people being sued because they downloaded something illegally. i skimmed the summary on the pirate bay website until i noticed the creative commons tag and i thought “oh well, let’s give it a try”.
so, what is it about?
This is the story of Mette
Member of a neo-Nazi gang, her day job is to take care of four crazy old people that all are just waiting to die. Her life becomes a journey into a burlesque fairytale, where the rules of the game are created by Mette herself. Mette is indifferent about her way of life, until she one night assaults a man, kicking him senseless. Waking up the day after, she realizes that something is wrong, and in company with the her crazy oldies she longs for respect and love. She can tell that the old folks are marginalized by the modern society, but together they create a world and a voice of their own.
today i was watching the bluray of “australia” (which i didn’t like) which i stopped about midway and noticed that the download of nasty old people was finished. then i thought i should give it a try and watched the whole movie in one sitting, not even getting up for popcorn. something that really made me stick to my seat was the feeling of watching something real to unfold, bit by bit. the characters are extremely well drawn and about as scary or weird as my mom mentions every now and then (since she is in some kind of home help service herself). some of the transitions between events are shown as stop motion paper-cutout sequences which work very well combined with the lovely music in the background.
without spoiling the ending sequence i think it brought the movie to a nice close.
hanna, thanks a lot for sharing this movie with us!
i am sure to donate and i am very much looking forward to seeing another movie from you again!

this one came out of fucking nowhere.
characters so believable and very well drawn, a story that is simple yet new, a great soundtrack – what more can you ask for?
so, what is it about?
a chubby girl is chosen to perform in one of those really awkward children beauty pageants, followed by her underachieving dad, her devastated mom, a suicidal gay uncle, a mute-by-choice older brother and their swearing, porn loving old grandpa. they all get stuffed in a yellow vw bus to get to the beauty contest and have to endure a hilarious and touching journey with so many wonderfully drawn moments – i love it.
even the trailer cracks me up every time i see it.

i’ve picked this one up because i like steve carell.
he had a top notch performance in “little miss sunshine” (yeah, i think that deserves a review as well – will post that later on) and that’s what lead me to “dan in real life” which was surprisingly good and now over to “the 40 year old virgin“.
out of those movies, this one was the most cliché laden one and the ending… no spoilers here but come on… seriously.
apart from that the movie was fun, pacing was good and the plot twists – well, you saw them coming.
you might want to take a look at it for the laughs and the situations he stumbles into, but i was expecting something a little different.
*hm* just popped up in my head: if you are looking into the whole nerd-finds-girl story, stick to “the big bang theory” (although this hasn’t evolved yet) or “chuck”.

three time’s the charm – with the best movie for today’s reviews as the last.
let’s not dilly-dally.
“man on wire” blew me away.
it was one of the movies i picked up last week from amazon.co.uk and everything i knew about it was that it was supposed to be really good for a documentary.
a “really good documentary”? *hm* that might need further investigation.

as i am writing this entry, the credits for m. night shymalans latest movie “the happening” are rolling in the background.
how do i put this delicately…
you certainly know that feeling. you put something together, crafted something with your own hands. and it does the job it’s intended to do.
but it is fugly as hell. wires are hanging out, screws are mangled and it seems to fall apart any second.
that’s how i would describe “the happening”.
should i go into detail? i think it would be worthwhile. and i finally can give a review that doesn’t end with me praising the movie.

every so often a movie comes along that manages to capture a mood or situation so perfectly that you cannot help but to sit back and witness the people involved and their story to unfold.
juno is one of those films.

i ran into some troubles yesterday as i was trying to convert some full hd video footage of the canon eos 5d mkii to be used on youtube in high definition.
on the mac i used imovie hd which performed quite well when it came to editing, though it lacks some editing features which is why i chose to try out some other editing tools.
it came down to this:
adobe premiere elements 7 (trial) versus apple imovie hd (ilife suite that came bundled with my macbook pro in 2007)
