last week i bought the yesss! mobile internet modem starter kit (about 150€).

the box stated it supported only windows so hofer/aldi is not to blame – yet i blame huawei, the manufacturer, for running a piss poor and unintuitive website where i needed to use google search on the site to find the drivers page.

but that didn’t help either. the modem wasn’t recognized by leopard, that’s why i started searching the web for solutions.

something that really helped me was a blog article by daniel kulosa (http://www.kulosa.net) who gave exact instructions on how to setup and use the modem.

since the article is in german, i will translate it for others to get some help.

how to setup the huawei e220 on macosx leopard:

1. get the drivers for the modem containing the mobile connect suite here.
2. disconnect the modem (it must not be connected to the laptop/computer), then install the driver depending if it is a ppc or intel mac, and finally install the mobile connect suite.
3. reboot your mac, wait until osx is fully loaded, then connect the modem with the installed sim-card.
4. wait about ten seconds, then start mobile connect (applications>mobile connect). if the modem fails to be detected close mobile connect and restart it. the modem will be found eventually. when it has been found, the pin popup will appear.
5. deactivate the pin protection via “manage pin” in the menu. though this might be stupid it has to be done.
6. you can now close mobile connect and start up the system configuration via go>applications>system preferences>network and pick the entry “huawei modem”.
7. a sample configuration for yesss! would look like this:
   telephone number: *99#
   username has to be empty
   password has to be empty
8. now click “advanced” and choose vendor: “other” and model “huawei – mobile connect”, then click “ok” and “apply”.
9. you should now be able to connect with your yesss! huawei modem and macosx leopard.
