har2009 preparations

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

har 2009 is right around the corner.

i just backed up the macbook pro using time machine and i am doing a clean install of macosx to make sure that no password or login data might fall in the wrong hands if it should get compromised or stolen (i will do so when i get back from har2009, too).

something i am also packing for the trip will be the eos 5d mkii. yes, this is expensive equipment, but since i am there among fellow geeks  there might be some others who use it as well and would enjoy some chit-chat.

pictures and details will follow when i am back.

converting movies for your ipod/iphone

i am a huge fan of scrubs, the simpsons, lost and futurama.
over the years i have bought all available collectors edition dvds, but i am lazy which means usually i don’t sift through boxes of tv shows just to find “this one episode” located on some disc in some other box.
is there a quicker and more comfortable way to watch those shows?

my macbook pro (10.5.2) crashed today when i wanted to partition it using bootcamp assistant. it displayed the error message that my computer had to be restarted by holding the power button. i did just that and ended up with a disk that was missing 32gb space. what the fuck?

virtual machines and games

by design, a virtual machine used to be an encapsulated system – a “pc within a pc”. as far as emulation goes it was capable of displaying two dimensional graphics, stereo audio and share some cpu and ram.
the next generation of virtual machines are incredibly more powerful and prove this by running games. in a virtual machine. with hardware graphics support.

how to: huawei e220 on macosx leopard

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

last week i bought the yesss! mobile internet modem starter kit (about 150€).

the box stated it supported only windows so hofer/aldi is not to blame – yet i blame huawei, the manufacturer, for running a piss poor and unintuitive website where i needed to use google search on the site to find the drivers page.

but that didn’t help either. the modem wasn’t recognized by leopard, that’s why i started searching the web for solutions.

something that really helped me was a blog article by daniel kulosa (http://www.kulosa.net) who gave exact instructions on how to setup and use the modem.

mac/linux/windows toolbox

Monday, May 28th, 2007

since i’ve always been jumping around between different operating systems i was happy to find out, that most of the tools i kept using over the last couple of years not only run on windows and linux, but also on macosx!
by now i’ve collected and installed most (if not all) of the tools i need to get around with the system and don’t have to learn new tricks. i know this might be a limitation, but i rather work with something that has proven to be useful to me than getting to know the new stuff instead of creating and using it.
