in terms of photography the last weeks were rather dull. bad weather, no sunlight – not the best parameters for interesting photographs.
alas, today the sun came out and i took the opportunity to take a couple of new pictures. :)

here is one of todays shots:

time lapse candle macro in hd

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

it’s been a while since i shot my last time lapse clip and i am happy to finally present the candle clip that i intended to shoot for a very long time:

the clip consists of 3100 jpgs combined using virtualdub and exported as an xvid avi file. it runs at 36 frames per second with the pictures being taken each one second apart.
the equipment I used was:

  • canon eos 5d mkii @ iso 100
  • tokina at-x pro 100 f/2.8 @ f/8.0
  • tc-80n3 timer remote @ 1second intervals
  • manfrotto tripod & head

the pictures were taken in jpg form to save space, then imported to lightroom, resized to 1280×853 and then exported. virtualdub was used to merge the jpg files into a video clip with the nine inch nails song “36 ghosts iv” as atmospheric background.

total working time (shooting and post processing): about 3 hours.

i might produce a full hd version of the clip later down the line and release it via bittorrent.

this is the question that i am usually getting asked when someone talks to me about photography.
and then i show them pictures like this:

usually they get pretty silent after that.

    doing_it_wrong

a perfect example of “you are doing it wrong”

when you are new to dlsr photography and have racked up some nice gear to work with you are probably tempted to take all the lenses, the flash, the tripod, some filters and some other stuff with you.

i know what i am talking about since i thought the same way quite a while ago.

turns out, as of now i am usually going out for shoots with one lens attached to the camera, one lens to swap on-the-go and an extra memory chip in case i might find a really great spot and that’s it.

    but why?

tokina at-x pro 100mm f/2.8 macro lens review

    Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

“the digital picture” wrote something along the lines of a macro lens having the best “fun per buck” ratio. and i absolutely agree with that.
what is a macro lens then?
