back on track

January 16th, 2010

in terms of photography the last weeks were rather dull. bad weather, no sunlight - not the best parameters for interesting photographs.
alas, today the sun came out and i took the opportunity to take a couple of new pictures. :)

here is one of todays shots:

bus19

over 30 years ago, my uncle set off to india in a converted and painted bus, accompanied by a few of his friends. listening to stories about this journey is one of my most precious memories of my uncle. these are some pictures of the bus, with it’s interior worn down and the painting peeling off of it’s surface - but it’s still one of the most memorable things i have ever seen… Read the rest of this entry »

time lapse candle macro in hd

November 7th, 2009

it’s been a while since i shot my last time lapse clip and i am happy to finally present the candle clip that i intended to shoot for a very long time:

the clip consists of 3100 jpgs combined using virtualdub and exported as an xvid avi file. it runs at 36 frames per second with the pictures being taken each one second apart.
the equipment I used was:

  • canon eos 5d mkii @ iso 100
  • tokina at-x pro 100 f/2.8 @ f/8.0
  • tc-80n3 timer remote @ 1second intervals
  • manfrotto tripod & head

the pictures were taken in jpg form to save space, then imported to lightroom, resized to 1280×853 and then exported. virtualdub was used to merge the jpg files into a video clip with the nine inch nails song “36 ghosts iv” as atmospheric background.

total working time (shooting and post processing): about 3 hours.

i might produce a full hd version of the clip later down the line and release it via bittorrent.

    “nasty old people”

    October 26th, 2009

yesterday i was looking for new “storm chasers” episodes when i noticed the pirate bay promoting a film called “nasty old people“. at first i thought it would be another major movie release and i didn’t want to get caught in a wake of people being sued because they downloaded something illegally. i skimmed the summary on the pirate bay website until i noticed the creative commons tag and i thought “oh well, let’s give it a try”.

    so, what is it about?

This is the story of Mette

Member of a neo-Nazi gang, her day job is to take care of four crazy old people that all are just waiting to die. Her life becomes a journey into a burlesque fairytale, where the rules of the game are created by Mette herself. Mette is indifferent about her way of life, until she one night assaults a man, kicking him senseless. Waking up the day after, she realizes that something is wrong, and in company with the her crazy oldies she longs for respect and love. She can tell that the old folks are marginalized by the modern society, but together they create a world and a voice of their own.

today i was watching the bluray of “australia” (which i didn’t like) which i stopped about midway and noticed that the download of nasty old people was finished. then i thought i should give it a try and watched the whole movie in one sitting, not even getting up for popcorn. something that really made me stick to my seat was the feeling of watching something real to unfold, bit by bit. the characters are extremely well drawn and about as scary or weird as my mom mentions every now and then (since she is in some kind of home help service herself). some of the transitions between events are shown as stop motion paper-cutout sequences which work very well combined with the lovely music in the background.

without spoiling the ending sequence i think it brought the movie to a nice close.

hanna, thanks a lot for sharing this movie with us!
i am sure to donate and  i am very much looking forward to seeing another movie from you again!

“turn off the sun, pull the stars from the sky.
the more I give to you, the more I die.” - the perfect drug, nine inch nails

there isn’t a better fitting title for that. i set off with my camera in hand a few minutes after midnight and didn’t know where to go first. somewhere i always end up when i am bored is in zeiselmauer right at the danube. almost no light pollution and a wide open area makes this a great spot for night time photography. once i was there it felt creepy. there were noises of animals everywhere, mosquitos bit me in the face but it was absolutely right. shots two and three were taken there, with one exposure of about one minute each. all in all i was there for about an hour, then packed up again and felt like pushing the envelope, so i went to tulln into the aubad because of the lake/sky setting. the outcome is a little different to what i had in mind, but i am still happy with the final result. if the sky is that bright again tonight, i will be out again.

fitting music helps, so i popped in the “the perfect drug” remix i downloaded earlier from remix.nin.com . one of the best remixes i have ever heard…

    har2009 preparations

    August 9th, 2009

har 2009 is right around the corner.

i just backed up the macbook pro using time machine and i am doing a clean install of macosx to make sure that no password or login data might fall in the wrong hands if it should get compromised or stolen (i will do so when i get back from har2009, too).

something i am also packing for the trip will be the eos 5d mkii. yes, this is expensive equipment, but since i am there among fellow geeks  there might be some others who use it as well and would enjoy some chit-chat.

pictures and details will follow when i am back.
